The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), 18 U.S.C. §1030 et seq. is the primary federal computer intrusion statute in the United States. 

The timelines below present the CFAA's statutory history and the statute's evolution through criminal and civil caselaw.

In the 2020-2021 term, the Supreme Court decided Van Buren v. United Statesconsidering the scope of the CFAA, specifically whether a user’s authorized access to information for an unauthorized purpose violates the CFAA.
